Merchant of Venice
Performance Dates: Wednesday 25 – Saturday 28 July 2018
Performance Venue: Cannizaro Park (Wimbledon)
Director: Matt Bentley
In Venice, Bassanio needs money in order to woo the wealthy heiress, Portia. Antonio, one of Venice’s leading merchants, promises to help Bassanio out, but to do so he must guarantee a loan from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender who drives a very hard bargain. When Antonio’s ships are wrecked, Shylock calls in his gruesome debt, and it’s up to Antonio’s friends to save him. Forbidden romance, a puzzling bequest, heroes in disguise, and seemingly-magical rings combine to make The Merchant of Venice one of the bard’s most entertaining tales.
Shakespeare’s Venice was a party town, with its inhabitants constantly on the move to the next soiree. This production will use that to find as much humour as possible in one of the more dramatic comedies. Put on your fanciest dress, and come and join the festivities!
The beautiful setting of Cannizaro Park will once again provide us with a stunning backdrop for this year’s open-air performances, continuing Mayhem’s popular summer tradition of bringing the Bard to South London.
Auditions will be held on Monday 7th and Thursday 10th May, with recalls on Sunday 13th May.
